Packing a Box for International Moving

Packing a Box for International Moving

Packing is a tedious task, no matter the occasion. This process becomes even more involved for international moves, during which your belongings are hauled by nearly all means of transportation, whether boat, plane or automobile. If you’re planning for an international move, remember that organization and preparation are the keys to a successful relocation.

Packing with Boxes

Don’t gamble on the quality of your shipping containers when preparing to pack for your international move. Since your belongings are being transported a long distance and for an extended period of time, the more securely your goods are packed the less likely it is that you’ll experience problems with your move. Here are some helpful packing tips:

  • Glassware – Carefully wrap your breakable goods in layers of paper and/or bubble wrap. Insulate a sturdy box with crumpled paper and place your goods inside the box. Double seal the container when full. Clearly label the box “fragile” so movers will know to take extra care while transporting.
  • Mirrors and frames – Select a flat box, line the edges with crushed paper, wrap the mirror with bubble wrap, and tape the box securely.
  • Electronics – Use original boxing if available, or a snug, strong box. Flat screens should be packed in an upright position and covered with a cloth to prevent scratches. Insulate the box with bubble wrap and double seal it once full.
  • Clothing – For wrinkle-free clothes, wardrobe boxes are a great option. If you choose to use standard boxes make sure they are small, as compacted clothes are dense and can be difficult to lift.
