Tips for Moving Electronics

electronics-movingWhether you have to move a few TVs and DVD players or hundreds of computers and printers, moving electronics requires thoughtful planning and consideration to ensure the job is done without damaging highly fragile and valuable equipment. Before you move your electronics, you need to first decide if it is a job you can handle by yourself, or one that is better left to the professionals. In most cases, hiring a professional electronics moving team is the way to go, since they have the specialized equipment necessary to pack, load, and transport large-screen televisions, banks of data servers, speakers and amplifiers, and other types of electronics.

If you decide to pack and move your own electronics, there are several things you will want to do to help prevent your items from getting damaged. These include:

  • Packing your electronics in their original cartons – If you cannot find the original boxes to your items, then be sure to buy boxes that are large enough to accommodate stuffing the inside with soft materials to insulate your electronics from any blows the packages might receive during the moving process.
  • Using plenty of Styrofoam peanuts or crumpled newspaper – Additionally, old clothes, gift wrap tissue, and towels are perfect for filling the empty spaces around the electronic items packed inside the boxes.
  • Clearly labeling boxes – Be sure that the contents of your electronics boxes are clearly identified, and mark each box with the word “FRAGILE.” You will also want to indicate what side of the box should remain up, with an arrow pointing to the side of the box that must remain facing upward.

Whether you move your electronics or a moving company does, make sure your items are never exposed to temperatures lower than 40 degrees or higher than 85, as extreme hot or cold can easily damage sensitive electrical components. For that reason, if your electronics will need to be stored during the moving process, be sure they are placed in a climate-controlled facility with little humidity.
