How Do You Pack Boxes for a Move?

How Do You Pack Boxes for a Move?Instead of paying your moving company to pack your belongings, you can save money by packing them yourself, but you will want to make sure that it’s done according to the company’s specific standards. Generally, movers require that all boxes are properly packed and ready for loading when the truck arrives. Only items that you may need on your last night in your home, or the next morning, or immediately at your new destination should be left for last-minute packing.

A representative from your moving company will inspect your boxes, and if it’s determined that items in a box may be susceptible to damage due to improper packing, the company may refuse to load it until it’s repacked. To avoid this, here are some general guidelines that you should follow:

Use High-Quality Boxes & Packing Materials

Boxes and packing supplies specially designed for moving are tougher than comparable supplies and will better ensure that your items arrive safely. Other supplies you’ll definitely want to have on hand are paper towels or packing paper for delicate items, rolls of PVC tape, a tape dispenser, scissors or a sharp knife for cutting boxes, and a marker, labels, or stickers for identifying boxes.

Protect Items Inside the Box

To prevent your belongings from being scratched or broken, wrap them with bubble wrap or packing paper and pour a layer of packing peanuts into the bottom of the box. Use two to three sheets of paper for each glassware item, and when in doubt, use more.

Pack According to Weight & Shape

Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter, more fragile items on top, with layers separated by a cushion foam. Plates, books, and items of a similar shape should be packed vertically to optimize space and utilize their structural strength. Before closing the box, stuff packing peanuts or wadded paper into unfilled spaces to prevent your items from shifting around during the move. Then, seal your box with sturdy packing tape.

Limit the Weight of Your Boxes to About 30 Pounds

You want be able to lift your boxes without strain. Keep in mind, too, that an overstuffed box can rupture, potentially damaging your belongings. You also want to avoid under-packing, since an under-filled box can collapse during transit.

Label Your Boxes

Using a broad, felt-tipped marker, label your boxes with your name, the contents, and the destination room. Where appropriate, indicate “Fragile” or “This End Up.” Labeling your boxes correctly can speed up unpacking, saving you time that’s better spent familiarizing yourself with your new home.
